Congratulations! You’ve taken a crazy idea and turned it into a useful product. The entire world will benefit from it, and you will be lauded as the next best person in technology since Steve Jobs.

However, you’ve been advised to have a focus group prior to launching this 8th World Wonder. After all, you do want to get some preliminary feedback regarding how your target market would actually react (there’s only so much that speculation alone can predict). Market research is king, and technology based companies get to reap several benefits from conducting them.

  1. They help you narrow down your target market: Your grandmother is not going to be as excited about a new photo sharing app as your 22-year-old niece. However, some tech gadgets do translate well across generations. The only way to have a good understanding of how different demographics will react to your product is to have people of the desired age, education level, income bracket, and gender be participants in a focus group.
  2. Digital focus groups eliminate geographical barriers: It’s 2018. You no longer have to sit several people in the same room to discuss your product. By moderating digital focus groups, you can get people from all over the city (or the state, or the country, or the world!) together to discuss a potential app or tech device. Would the new features make their lives easier? Would a modification make the product more appealing? You can get creative with this by creating a social media private group and interacting with them with a webcam; or you could use software specifically designed for this purpose.
  3. Incorporate Mixed Reality: One of the best ways to be memorable is to use innovative technology to get people excited about your product. Mixed Reality allows potential consumers to feel like they’re experiencing your tech device in real time, before actually buying it. A simple headset using mixed reality will make the gadget look as real as if your focus group had the product right in front of them.

The best way to collect reliable data is straight from the horse’s mouth.  The competition in the tech market is stiff, so you really have to go the extra mile to make sure you’re providing a product that will actually pique people’s interest. In order to maximize the exercise, have a preset list of focus questions that you can use to help guide discussion. If you don’t have the time or expertise to get it done, contact us. Let Marketing Matters help you.

Welcome to 2018! As the future quickly becomes the present, technology is moving forward at dizzying speeds and in formats we never dreamed of. Blink a few times and there will be new smart gadgets and probably even flying cars  – It’s all closer than you think. Already we’ve seen a whole new opportunity for interactive marketing.

Technology and trends can be hard to keep up with but at this point, most of us have heard of Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR). Now, we’re hearing buzz about a new term… Mixed Reality (MR). But how is it any different from the existing stuff?

Pokémon Go and the ensuing insanity

Just when we thought that we had all outgrown the video game stage, our friends and cohorts started buzzing about this revival of the Pokemon characters, only now the hunting was out there in the real world and the console was wireless, portable, and connected to other “consoles”, A.K.A. our phones.

Due to the massive success of Pokemon Go and the usage of MR in experiential learning and training, augmented reality (AR) has quickly become a new way to market products.

Enter mixed reality.

By wearing a reasonably priced headset, users can experience an alternate reality that looks as real as everything else around them, making it a useful tool for marketing purposes. With mixed reality, potential customers would have the ability to “test out” your products before buying them. They would be able to explore the product and learn about its usage in its anticipated environment. No need to believe the “Trust me, when you see it, it makes sense.”. There’s only so much information a person can gain from reading about a product – Mixed Reality takes it to the next level.

Another reason to consider investing in Mixed Reality as a marketing tool is that people tend to get excited about trying out new technologies. Just the process of putting on the headset and getting to escape reality for a few minutes is enough to make a specific vendor memorable. Think of it this way: Would you likely buy furniture that you see staged in a Sears catalog, or the furniture you can literally see in YOUR living room?

The coolest aspect of mixed reality is that it feels so real. For example, users will feel as if they just stepped into an alternate universe, walked through a portal, or learned how to do magic. With Mixed Reality, what’s real and what’s fantasy blend in to form the exact kind of experience a user wants. It allows the user to visualize and experience your product in real time. What could be better than that to get your marketing message across?

Structured panels boast flexible mounting for stud spacing variations

HOLLY HILL, Fla. – January 4, 2018 – Metra Home Theater Group®, a leading provider of home theater products and accessories for the integration community, announces Structured Wiring Panels and TV Mounts, debuting at CES 2018 from January 9 – 12, 2018 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Metra Home Theater Group has expanded their  portfolio to include structured wiring panels, a new product category for the manufacturer. The structured panels offer flexible mounting for stud spacing variations in either a recessed or a surface mount installation. They are constructed of solid steel with a durable, white powder coat finish and include grommets and ten cable ties and mounts. Three sizes are available for 14” (CS-SP14), 20” (CS-SP20) or 28” (CS-SP28) panels. Hinged metal panel doors are sold separately, and include a lock and two keys for added security. The structured panel doors can support up to four 120mm cooling fans with preset mounting holes and integrated louvered ventilation for improved cooling. Doors are available for 14” (CS-SPD14), 20” (CS-SPD20) and 28” (CS-SPD28) panels.

Metra Home Theater Group’s new Helios TV mounts solve the problems of today’s custom integrators. “We listened to integrators who are in the field every day to see how we could adapt our products to better serve their needs. Their feedback helped us redesign our next generation of Helios TV mounts,” says Stewart Denton, manager of product development for Metra Home Theater Group.

Commercial or residential buildings can provide a challenge for TV mount installation if the standard 16” studs are not in place. To address this issue, many of the new mounts are compatible with both 16” and 24” center studs to offer a more versatile mounting solution for integrators. Two new large, full motion mounts for 42” to 84” TVs are offered with a center extension (FML642) or a side extension (FML64S). These sturdy mounts have a weight capacity of 132 pounds, a tilting angle of +5 to -15 degrees, and allow for dual stud installation with 16” or 24” center studs. The LPU64 is a new, ultra-low profile, fixed TV mount for 42” – 84” TVs that is only 14 mm (0.55”) from the wall. It has a weight capacity of 99 pounds and offers dual stud installation. The FMM44 is a full motion mount for medium sized TVs from 26” to 60”, with a weight capacity of 66 pounds and single stud installation. The FM44IW is a 400×400 full motion mount designed for in-wall installations between 16” center studs. It fits TVs from 32” to 60” and has a weight capacity of 75 pounds.

Ah, the Internet. It came here to make our lives easier: We can order food, find a date, and market our products from the comfort of our couch. And, we can go shopping! Shopping! – without having to find a parking spot, deal with crowds or stand in line. Being able to do things faster by skipping steps has become a way of life. But when it comes to customer service, you can’t afford to cut corners. If you want leads to turn into loyal customers, keep reading.

  1. Make it easy for people to contact you. Have you ever shopped at Zappos? If you haven’t had the pleasure, let me walk you through the process: You place your order, and you get a clever/funny/cute email confirmation. For example, if you made your purchase during the holidays, they might tell you that elves sang Christmas carols as they shipped your package. Unless you’re a Grinch, that will put a smile on your face.

And once you get the package? Right on the top flap, they include their customer service number. So, if those shoes don’t fit, you can call while the open box is still laying by your feet. And best of all? They answer phone calls promptly! Which leads us to the next point on this list…

  1. Human communications: Ask anyone what’s one of the most frustrating things when they call a customer service number, and chances are they will mention all the awful pre-recorded menu options. And, it always seems that they just “recently updated the menu, so please listen carefully.” So, we sit, and we listen to the five hundred and thirty-two asinine alternatives, hoping that one of them applies to us. Don’t annoy people from the get go. Have someone answer that phone.

  1. Actually LISTEN. Ok, so just because a human answered the call, it doesn’t necessarily mean they give a hoot about what we have to say. How infuriating is it to get through to a call center, only to have it be painfully obvious that they are following a script? “I’m sorry that you feel that way, ma’am, but [insert reason why they can’t help you].”

Do you think that caller is going to sigh and call it a night? NO! They will go to Yelp, your Facebook page, your Twitter page, FourSquare, and Google Reviews and write about how awful your business is. Nobody likes to feel slighted; much less when they paid money for a service or product. Train your staff to pay close attention to customers and bend over backwards to solve their concerns (within reason).

  1. Engage in conversations on social media: If someone leaves you a question on Facebook or Twitter, it’s not meant to be decoration on your page. Take a moment to reply and offer solutions for their issues. If done effectively, you might not even have to deal with a call center (try finding a Customer Service number for Spotify online. I dare you. But if you leave them a direct message on Twitter, they will answer within minutes).

  1. Treat your employees well: Who do you think is going to go the extra mile for your business? Someone who feels like a replaceable means to an end, or someone who feels appreciated? Train them well so that they have the tools to implement your policies, and reward good work when it merits it.

Marketing involves a lot of common sense; but it also requires a lot of learning by trial and error. Instead of going crazy trying to figure out a formula that works, contact us. If you’re in the tech business, Marketing Matters is here to help.
